The Mathiers came to Salgesch as early as 1387. Coming from Marseille, they migrated to Switzerland via Grenoble. Their goal was a better life than in their poverty-stricken homeland. Founder Albert Mathier laid the foundation for the winery, which is now run by his descendant Amédée. The vineyards are located in Salgesch and the surrounding area and are characterised by limestone and slate soils. The cellar has long been innovative and was the first Swiss winery to use amphorae.
