Weingut Lackner-Tinnacher is located in the midst of vineyards on a ridge of hills in Steinbach near Gamlitz. Viticulture has been practised on the estate for centuries; as early as 1787, four vineyard parcels were described in detail in the Josephinian cadastre. Today the estate is run by Katharina Tinnacher. Approximately 28 hectares of vineyards are located at ideal climatic altitudes of 400 to 500 metres on the best steep slopes in the wine-growing villages of Gamlitz and Kitzeck-Sausal.
The vineyards are the focus of Katharina Tinnacher's attention. They are cultivated carefully and organically. The vines are carefully trained by hand to achieve a higher degree of ripeness. Harvesting is usually late, with particular attention paid to optimum harvesting times by hand. It is also common practice for the grapes to reach the press quickly and intact and to be pressed gently. For many years, traditional and meticulous vinification has been the hallmark of the winery's timeless, elegant line.
The wines are always finely structured, infused with depth of fruit and shaped by the soil, climate and vintage. All the estate's wines are sourced from the estate's own vineyards. The individual sites and vineyards have different soil conditions, and Katharina Tinnacher is keen to show these fine structural differences in the wine. The main variety is Sauvignon Blanc, with the grapes for the local Gamlitz Sauvignon Blanc growing on predominantly sandy-gravelly soils. The Sauvignon Blanc Ried Welles has a stony, mineral-rich gravel conglomerate subsoil and a topsoil of red and grey sands. The winery also focuses on Pinot varieties: Pinot Blanc Ried Eckberg and Morillon Ried Eckberg are grown on limestone marl soils, while Pinot Blanc Ried Steinbach and Pinot Gris Ried Steinbach thrive on sandy and gravelly soils. In addition, Welschriesling, Gamlitz Gelber Muskateller and Gelber Muskateller Ried Gamitz are pressed from over fifty years old vines.
At the beginning of 2008, the winery was expanded to include vineyards in the Ried Flamberg in the municipality of St. Nikolai im Sausal. The five hectares of south-southwest facing, basin-shaped slopes offer a unique terroir characterised by coral limestone soils, providing an exciting contrast to the Steinbach sites. Not surprisingly, Flamberg is now the focus of Katharina Tinnacher, who studied the interaction of vine, soil and climate during her studies at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences. In addition to preserving the valuable old vines, she is focusing on the cultivation of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot varieties at Flamberg. As of the 2016 vintage, all wines are certified organic.
