What is Sauvignon Blanc?
Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic white grape variety of French origin that is grown in wine regions around the world.
What does Sauvignon Blanc taste like?
Sauvignon Blanc has distinctly green aromatics which can range from green bell pepper via freshly cut grass and boxwood to tomato leaf and pea shoot. These notions are often accompanied by vivid fruit notes of citrus, peach and passion fruit and underlined by fresh acidity. When aged in oak, some of the headiness is lost but a creamy texture is gained, which is sometimes augmented by blending with Sémillon. Young Sauvignon Blanc lives off its aromatics but mature wines shine with freshness and texture.
Where is Sauvignon Blanc from?
Sauvignon Blanc’s exact origins are unclear but since it is an ancient natural crossing of Savagnin and another, unknown variety, it is thought to have originated somewhere in central France.
Where does Sauvignon Blanc grow?
Sauvignon Blanc is grown around the globe. It is widely planted in France, but it most readily associated with the wines of the Loire Valley in famous appellations like Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. In the Bordeaux region it shines, usually blended with Sémillon, in the appellation of Péssac-Leognan. Its acidity is also prized in the sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac. While there are pockets of Sauvignon Blanc in various European regions, the most famous region for Sauvignon Blanc, which gave the world a whole new appreciation of this grape variety, is Marlborough on New Zealand’s South Island. In fact, Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s most widely planted grape by far. Sauvignon Blanc is also grown in California, South Africa, and Chile.
