Airbnb to crack down on unauthorised rowdy gatherings

The party is over! Airbnb has introduced new prevention measures to crack down on unauthorised parties held at its rental properties.

Airbnb is to deploy a new form of anti-party technology to deal with guests who vandalise their booked homes with massive bashes.

The screening system, which has been piloted in Australia, looks at different factors such as history of reviews, length of time the guest has been on Airbnb, length of the trip, distance to the listing, weekend vs. weekday bookings, among other things. The purpose of the technology is to reduce the ability of badly-behaved guests to throw unauthorised parties and “to help identify potentially high-risk reservations.”

A similar version of this system has been trialed in Australia since October 2021, and has resulted in a 35% drop in incidents involving unauthorised parties, the company says.

“It’s integral to our commitment to our host community – who respect their neighbours and want no part of the property damage and other issues that may come with unauthorised or disruptive parties,” Airbnb added in a statement.

This new system is an upgrade of the “under-25” system that has been in effect in North America since 2020, which targets guests under the age of 25 without positive reviews who are booking a property locally.

Airbnb plans to introduce the new prevention measures in the US and Canada and will continue to operate them in Australia.
