Austrian Wine Marketing Board Releases Digital Vineyard Map

The Austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB) has released the world’s first digital wine atlas covering an entire wine-producing country.

The Austrian Wine Marketing Board has just released a digital wine atlas that drills down to single vineyard detail.

It can be accessed free of charge here austrianvineyards.com and covers all legally defined appellations of origin:

  • 27 winegrowing regions
  • 458 winegrowing municipalities
  • 56 Ortswein locations (villages wines)
  • 4,343 single vineyards (Rieden)

The single vineyards of Steiermark (Styria) will be added to the map by the end of 2021.

The map also contains valuable statistical information. Each single vineyard map comes with additional data including area under vine, elevation, incline, orientation, average temperature and precipitation.

The project took three years from conception to publicaton and was developed together with Austria’s Department of Geography and Regional Research at the University of Vienna and private company plan+land. Johannes Schmuckenschlager, chairman of the Austrian Winegrowers’ Association, said: “The new single vineyard maps – both in digital and printed form – represent the very essence of origin marketing for Austrian wines.” Susanne Ertler-Staggl who managed the project for the AWMB said: “Clear, transparent information about all wine origins is the foundation for any serious and successful wine-producing country.”
