It's enough to make any beer lover weep – a New Zealand brewery is disposing of thousands of litres of beer after going bust.
The beer, which was made at West Coast Brewery in the South Island, was stored in vats and kegs. But now it is being dumped because excise duty had not been paid and a buyer for the beer could not be found, Stuff reported. New Zealand Customs is trying to liquidate West Coast Brewery after its parent company went into receivership earlier this year.
The disposal of roughly 7,000 litres of "slightly old" beer began this week. It is expected to take several weeks as the drains in the town of Westport cannot cope with too much liquid at once. The beer might be gone and the only brewery and beer tasting room in Westport might have closed, but there is light at the end of the tunnel, according to Stuff. A locally-born beer writer and expert has bought the brewery's equipment and lease and is due to return to the town next month.
