British Airways to cut 10,000 more Heathrow flights

More cancellations are in store for British Airways passengers, with the UK airline axing 10,000 flights to and from Heathrow until the end of March 2023.

British Airways, the largest operator at Heathrow, will cut around 10,000 short-haul flights to and from the airport between late October and March, local media reported.

Holiday makers in Britain have already experienced major flight disruptions after Heathrow, along with Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, imposed a daily limit on passenger numbers.

The UK airline's move will reduce total capacity for its winter schedule until the end of March by 8%, impacting around 10,000 flights, according to Sky News.

"While the vast majority of our customers will travel as planned, and we're protecting key holiday destinations over half-term, we will need to make some further cancellations up to the end of October," British Airways was quoted as saying.

"In addition, we're giving customers travelling with us this winter notice of some adjustments to our schedule, which will include consolidating some of our short-haul flights to destinations with multiple services."

Thousands of flights have already been cancelled this summer as the aviation industry grapples with surging demand and staff shortages.

Australian airline Qantas has even sought to plug its staff shortage by seeking more than 100 volunteers from among the ranks of its senior executives to work as ground crew.
