England footy fans to sink 15 million pints

UK

Supporters will head to the pub for last-16 clash against Senegal.

The World Cup has reached the knockout stages and England fans will celebrate their qualification by sinking millions of pints on Sunday night while watching the game against African superstars Senegal.

The British Beer and Pub Association, BBPA, say an additional £22million (€25.7million) will be pumped into the sector by the boost in sales, as fans flock to their favourite watering holes to enjoy the game.

A survey by the industry’s trade body ahead of the World Cup predicted the competition would see a 10 per cent boost in business, and the further England progress the better for a sector that has been hit hard by the cost-of-living crisis. Wales’ exit at the group stages will have hit trade in Welsh pubs, but bars up and down England will be hoping for an English win on Sunday and another boost to trade in a quarter-final clash.

“Pubs were hoping for a boost to business during this World Cup and so far, the beer has been flowing, and fans have been showing up to cheer on England,” said Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the BBPA.
