Henschke’s single vineyard wines Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone are icons of Australian winemaking.
Henschke’s Hill of Grace Shiraz is one of Australia’s flagship wines. Grown on a single site in Eden Valley, South Australia, and named after the Lutheran church that overlooks the vineyard, the vines were planted in 1860 and are now more 161 years old. They are amongst the oldest vines in Australia.
It was the late Cyril Henschke who first bottled Hill of Grace as a single vineyard wine in 1958 – the vines then were almost 100 years old. He was inspired to bottle it separately by the family’s other single vineyard wine, Mount Edelstone, made from Shiraz vines planted in 1912, and first released in 1952.
The 2016 vintages of Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone are released along with Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon and Keyneton Euphonium, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
“The 2016 vintage will be recognised for deeply coloured, plush, dark-fruited wines, which are concentrated, complex, vibrant and energetic, with beautifully layered mature tannins; overall characterised by average yields of small berries and exceptionally high quality,” says Stephen Henschke who runs the estate with his wife Prue and son Johann.
