Mobile phones could soon be used during flights

The EU Commission is currently considering allowing passengers to make in-flight phone calls.

Mobile phones are usually not allowed to be used during flights, some travellers finding the rules restrictive while others enjoy not having to constantly listen to the calls of fellow passengers on board. Now, however, the enforced silence on aircraft could soon be over: the EU Commission is considering abolishing the ban on mobile phones on European airlines. As with the 5G network on the ground, passengers would also be able to make phone calls and surf the internet on the plane. To do this, planes must be equipped with special 5G network technology, which would not be too costly; in the EU, specific frequencies are already reserved for use in aircraft but have not yet been used.

The EU would be the first region worldwide to allow the use of mobile phones during flights, with the US previously considering the move, but the technical equipment there is currently lacking. It remains unclear whether airlines from the UK will join the EU plan.
