National Dog Day: Dog-friendly holidays

Hotels and travel companies have adapted to meet the needs of our four-legged friends.

Are you celebrating National Dog Day on 26 August? How about a trip then? And for dogs who don't like to travel alone, it is possible to take people with you on holiday ...

The good news is that there is still plenty of accommodation in the UK for both people and dogs for the last few weeks of summer. For example, we looked at the offers from Petspyjamas, which specialises in dog travel: there is still enough capacity for the next few weeks and August Bank Holidays. For example, dogs and their owners might book the Charlecotte Pheasant Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon. There are also rooms free at the Oban Bay Hotel in Oban.

Petspyjamas has offered dog-friendly holiday packages since 2014. Dogs stay free with almost all bookings. After their first booking, customers become members of this company's so-called “Priority Paws” loyalty programme, which includes complimentary vet line access for the duration of the trip. Petspyjamas launched a new “boating holidays” programme this summer, which allows dogs (or owners) to play captain of a self-drive river cruiser or canal boat. It started at various locations around the UK, such as Wiltshire and Surrey, as well as France.

Doggie breaks have been more prevalent this summer, according to Landal GreenParks UK, the local arm of the European holiday park specialist. The company has spotted a surge in luxury doggie getaway bookings, with the average owner spending £1,229 on their family pet getaway, an increase of 23% compared to 2019.

And there is good news for dogs and their human companions if they live in Australia or will travel there: Australian hotel group, Ovolo, has announced an extension of its popular pet accommodation package, V.I.Pooch. Guests who book the package throughout September will receive a Waggly Club Box in their room pack, including a selection of healthy dog treats and premium dog toys. Ovolo calls itself the first pet-friendly hotel group in Australia. It introduced its V.I.Pooch package in 2020, becoming the first group in Australia to welcome guests and their fur babies, following the rise in Aussies wishing to travel with their pets.
