Russian McDonald’s substitute has no more fries
Putin’s alternative to McDonald’s is having to restrict the sale of fries.
Vkusno i Tochka – Russian for “Taste and that’s it” – was supposed to be an adequate substitute for McDonald’s: After the attack on Ukraine, the fast-food chain had withdrawn from Russia. But it has quickly run into problems: The new company announced that it would have to reduce the sale of French fries over the summer. There are simply not enough potatoes to produce the popular option. One reason for this is the sanctions imposed by western governments.
In autumn, however, there should again be enough fries for Russian customers. Complaints were already flooding social media about the quality of the food. And there have been several grumbles about expired goods as well. McDonald’s used to employ more than 60,000 people in Russia. A Russian entrepreneur who had previously operated several McDonald’s sites in Siberia has taken over the branches in Russia.
