Seafood and sustainability: Norway at its very best

Travel company Aurora Zone is offering food-focused trips to Tromsø, Norway.

Norway is known as a country where quality food and beautiful scenery make an impressive combination. UK travel company The Aurora Zone, now offers food-focused trips to the Norwegian city Tromsø, and over a three-night stay, travellers can enjoy fresh fish – caught minutes from the restaurant – pan-fried in butter with locally-picked chanterelles, and they can try the famous Norwegian brown cheese paired with regional wine. One of the highlights of this foodie trip is the chance to join Sámi reindeer herders for a traditional feast served under the stars.

Travellers can also hunt for the Aurora Borealis on two bespoke evening cruises on a Norwegian fjord, even dining under the Northern Lights. Visitors will stay in Tromsø where they can eat out at a selection of establishments with, in addition, two dinner cruises where travellers can dine away from any light pollution and increase their chances of seeing the Northern Lights while feasting on delectable cuisine.

Exploring the fjords

Sustainability is a vital part of this tour with the country seen as a pioneer in sustainable fishing methods, Norway operating strict catch limits (but whalers in Norway continue to carry out commercial whaling). All the food eaten on the trip is locally sourced, down to the wine and cheese included with dinner. One example is Fiskekompaniet, a seafood restaurant in the central harbour, where the chef will take guests on a tasting tour of the sea using only local produce their suppliers can provide.

Eating is not the only way to experience the treasures of Norway: when exploring the fjords around the city, travellers might look out for sea eagles and flocks of migratory birds in the air, and there are species of whale and dolphin hunting herring in the waters. The seas are also teaming with catfish, coalfish, pollock, haddock, halibut and Norwegian Skrei, the so-called cod king.

A three-night Gastronomy and Northern Lights tour to Tromsø, departing between 1 December 2022 and 29 March 2023, costs from £1,245 pp (two sharing) and includes return airport transfers, accommodation, two lunches and three dinners, plus a Polar Fjord Cruise, visit to the Reindeer Camp with dinner and Northern Lights Watch, Arctic Fishing Tour, and Northern Lights Dinner Cruise. The Aurora Zone specialises in trips to Scandinavia and calls itself “the first UK holiday company to be solely devoted to helping as many people as possible tick the Northern Lights off their wish lists”.
