‘Sushi terrorism’ keeps Japan on tenterhooks

Videos from sushi restaurants cause outrage in Japan.

Sushi restaurants where the food runs past guests who serve themselves according to their taste, are known and popular all over the world, but you can´t always be sure that the food on offer is fresh and flawless.

In Japan, videos and pictures from such restaurants have caused outrage: guests have filmed and photographed themselves touching the food amongst other things, with one teenager licking soy bottles and plates, which he then puts back on a shelf.

Videos of these incidents dubbed “sushi terrorism”, have been shared on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram, with the police now called in to take a closer look at the food grabbers. What’s more, the incidents didn’t happen in any backyard restaurants, but in places belonging to Sushiro, one of Japan´s largest sushi chains, with more videos being shared from other chains like Kura Sushi and Hama Sushi.

The uproar is particularly great in Japan, which is known for its high hygiene and health standards, with people thinking aloud about the need to install security cameras in such restaurants. Amongst the questions being asked is whether there is a need to rethink the concepts of the restaurants in general – for example, how long the food stays on the conveyor belts and how often plates and cutlery are changed.
