Sustainable Wine Roundtable Formed to Fight Climate Change

A new sustainability initiative for the wine industry has been founded, spanning the entire value chain.

Global sustainability standard

A global Sustainable Wine Roundtable has been formed with the goal of accelerating sustainability in the wine industry. The UK-based coalition of wine brands, distributors, retailers and environmental groups will work to create a global sustainability standard. "From droughts, to flooding, raising temperatures and wildfires. Social pressures around workers’ rights and diversity, the wine industry, like many others, has significant issues that need addressing," Argentine winery Domaine Bousquet, one of the 49 founding members, said.

No greenwashing

Domaine Bousquet said it was attracted to the Roundtable by its lack of "greenwashing" as members must demonstrate continuous improvement themselves, and by the diverse membership from Lidl GB and Cloudy Bay in New Zealand to Germany's Hochschule Geisenheim University and Whole Foods Market. The SRW will be open to general membership in 2022.
