It’s time to arm yourself for the festive season with some quirky wine facts. From record-breaking vineyards to endearing grape names and fine wine trivia, dip into this first instalment of curiously addictive information.

Day 1: Did you know winemakers have their own patron saint?

Everyone’s thoughts may turn to St Nicholas at this time of year, but what about the patron saint of wine and winemakers? St Vincent’s troubles certainly put the challenges faced by vintners in healthy perspective: he was imprisoned, tortured and ultimately martyred for his Christian faith by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 304AD. So, if you’re seeking another reason to skip Dry January, raise a glass to St Vincent on his feast day of 22nd January and pray for a benign growing season.
