The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 13

Not all New World wine countries are really that new.

We lazily classify South Africa and Chile as New World wine regions, but their long viticultural history rivals many famous European names. Spanish missionaries introduced the País grape variety to Chile as early as 1548.

Meanwhile in South Africa, Jan Van Riebeeck planted vines in 1655 to supply the Dutch East India Company, with Chenin Blanc, Semillon and Muscadel leading the charge. At this time, much of Bordeaux’s Médoc region was still a malarial salt marsh. Here too, it was Dutch expertise – this time in drainage – that would soon change all that.
