The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 14

Champagne has never been so cheap.

Think Champagne’s expensive? Well it’s an absolute bargain compared to a century ago, when this fizz was a truly luxurious choice. Back in 1925, London merchant Berry Bros & Rudd listed Louis Roederer 1920 for the equivalent of £0.63 per bottle. That’s almost double the price of Bordeaux first growth Château Margaux 1923, available on the same list for the equivalent of just £0.33 per bottle.

Fast forward to 2022 and Roederer’s 2014 vintage sits in UK supermarkets for £79, while a recent vintage of Château Margaux will set you back around £500 a bottle. Your choice.
