US patriots should drink more Madeira.

Yes, that’s right. It may not be as local as Napa Cabernet or Oregon Pinot, but then back in 1776 there wasn’t much of either available to toast the US Declaration of Independence.

Madeira, on the other hand, was very popular, being just about the only wine not only to survive but even improve on the voyage from Europe. Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and John Adams were all known to be fans, so it’s no surprise they chose Madeira to mark the momentous occasion when this fractious British colony became its own independent nation.
