The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 19

The favourite wines of historical figures.

Many leaders have taken inspiration or comfort from specific wines. Louis Roederer’s top cuvée Cristal was created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II. Paranoid about assassination – justifiably, it emerged – he ordered his Champagne be bottled in clear glass with no punt to guard against poison or bombs.

Napoleon Bonaparte consoled himself in exile on St Helena with regular orders of South Africa’s Vin de Constance, drinking a glass a day in his final week. And Britain’s Sir Winston Churchill was such a Pol Roger fan that the house named its prestige cuvée after him.
