The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 20

The world’s largest wine barrel.

Forget the Bordeaux barrel at a mere 225-litre capacity; skip over the Rhône’s 600-litre demi-muid and trot past those 1,000-litre German Fuder. Pause respectfully in Alsace at the 8,800-litre Ste Caterine foudre made in 1715, whose owner Hugel claims it is the oldest wine cask still in use.

But if you want to see the biggest wine barrel of them all, go to Piedmont in Italy, where earlier this year the Roberto Sarotto winery was officially confirmed as home to the world’s largest example. Its 47,865-litre capacity was filled with 2016 Barolo Riserva. That’s enough for quite a party.
