The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 21

Can you really be sure what’s in that bottle?

Chile may be famous for its Carmenere, which first arrived in the country during the 1850s, but until as recently as 1994, the country’s producers were under the mistaken belief that this variety was actually Merlot.

It’s a similar story in the USA, where a 1930s shipment of Pinot Blanc vines from France turned out instead to be Muscadet grape variety Melon de Bourgogne. The error was not confirmed until the 1980s, by which time this erroneously labelled plant material had been planted in many sites across California, Oregon and Washington. Known locally as “Melon”, it now has a niche but affectionate following.
