The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 22

What’s your name again?

We all know that Syrah and Shiraz are the same grape, but plenty of other varieties carry a mindboggling array of synonyms. Take Rioja’s flagship Tempranillo, which goes by the name of Tinto Fino in Ribeira del Duero, before becoming Tinta Roriz in the Douro but Aragonês in southern Portugal.

Then there’s Jura’s Trousseau, which pops up in the Douro under the rather less elegant name of Bastardo. Meanwhile, France’s Mourvèdre becomes Mataro in California and Australia. White grapes aren’t immune to this identity challenge: Welschriesling aliases include Olaszrisling (Hungary), Laskirizling (Slovenia), Riesling Italico (Italy) and Graševina (Croatia).
