The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 6
Which is the only Bordeaux estate to win a promotion within the 1855 Classification?
When Napoleon III hosted the Universal Exposition in Paris, his officials drew up a classification for the greatest Bordeaux wines. The result, which featured only Left Bank estates, was the famous 1855 classification, which still holds sway today.
But the creation of this list was inevitably political and, despite clear potential for an estate’s quality to improve or slip over time, no changes have ever been permitted. The sole exception is Château Mouton Rothschild, which gained promotion to First Growth status in 1973 after many decades of lobbying by owner Philippe de Rothschild. The estate’s motto reflects this: “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change.”
