The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 8
How many states in the US grow wine grapes?
It may seem difficult to believe, given the enormous climatic challenges, but today every single state in the USA, from Alaska to Alabama, Hawaii to Louisiana, produces wine. Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves: Arkansas is unlikely to overtake California anytime soon. In some of the trickier viticultural climates, classic vitis vinifera varieties give way to better adapted, local species such as vitis lambrusca.
Among the most popular of these is Concord, which thrives in north-eastern states such as Massachusetts. Then there’s cold-resistant Frontenac, which can cope with bitter Minnesota winters, while Scuppernong thrives in the heat and humidity of many south-eastern states. It’s even the official state fruit of North Carolina.
