The World's Safest Cities in 2021

Are you wondering what the safest cities would be for your next trip? Here are the latest global rankings from the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Copenhagen the safest

Denmark's capital Copenhagen has taken the top place in The Economist Intelligence Unit's annual ranking of the World's Safest Cities. The index covers 60 major cities and measures 76 indicators related to different aspects of urban safety. Previously, the safest cities were in Asia, but this year Copenhagen came first, with an overall score of 82.4 points out of 100. Canadian city Toronto was just behind on 82.2, with Singapore and Tokyo remaining in the top five – third and fifth respectively – with Australia's largest city Sydney coming in fourth.

Low crime rate

"One key factor that makes Copenhagen such a safe city is its low crime rate, currently at its lowest level in more than a decade," Copenhagen's lord mayor Lars Weiss told The Economist. The cities of Amsterdam, Wellington, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Stockholm rounded out the top 10. New York was the highest ranked US city, coming in at 11th equal with Barcelona. The most unsafe cities were Lagos, Cairo, Caracas, Karachi and Yangon.
