UK Cookery Star Mary Berry Being Made a Dame
Mary Berry, dubbed the Queen of Cakes, is being made a Dame in recognition of her cookery, writing and charity work.
British cookery writer and broadcaster Mary Berry is being made a Dame Commander today as part of the delayed Queen’s birthday honours list. Berry has published more than 80 books during her five decade-plus career and became a household name as a judge on The Great British Bake Off series and as the host of programmes such as Classic Mary Berry and Mary Berry’s Simple Comforts. ITV reported Berry will receive the honour from Prince Charles at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.
Queen of cakes
Dame Mary, dubbed the Queen of Cakes, trained at The Cordon Bleu in Paris, and in the 1960s was cookery editor of Housewife magazine, followed by Ideal Home. In 2012, the celebrity chef was made a CBE for services to culinary arts. Her books are said to be a favourite with the Royal family – according to ITV the Duchess of Cambridge revealed in 2019 that “Mary” was one of the first words uttered by her youngest child Prince Louis because he has been exposed to her cookbooks.
