Vega Sicilia Founds a New Winery in Galicia
The traditional Spanish producer Vega Sicilia will produce white Albariño wines in its new winery located in Galicia.
This year, the Álvarez family and CEO Pablo Álvarez celebrate the 40th anniversary of taking over the Vega Sicilia estate, famed for its legendary Unico wine. In the past decades, the renowned winery founded four wineries - among them Aliòn, Oremus, Pintia as well as the Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild-Vega Sicilia. Just in time for its big anniversary, Bodega Vega Sicilia has now announced the founding of its newest winery in Rías Baixas in Galicia.
The winery will be built in Crecente, a total of 24 hectares of vineyards and land have already been acquired - mainly in Condado de Tea, in the upper part of the Miño River; in Salnés near Cambados, O Grove and Sanxenxo as well as in Crecente itself. A sum of about EUR 20 million will be invested in both winery and vineyards.
Two white wines in particular are to be produced from the Albariño grape: Deiva, which will mature for two years and thus be harvested for the first time in 2023, to be released in 2025. The second, Arnela, is to become the group's premium white wine with an ageing period of three years. The Álvarez family aims for a total production of 300,000 bottles for both wines - depending on the quality and yields.
