World Cup 2022 in Qatar: Fans need negative Covid-19 tests

The latest controversy surrounding the upcoming World Cup in Qatar has seen football fans told: Covid-19 vaccinations won't do.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, which starts on November 20, produces daily headlines – both positive and negative – and yesterday it was revealed that the Danish team will wear kits with faded logos, badges and chevrons. The Denmark decision is seen as a statement about Qatar´s human rights record and its treatment of migrant workers, according to the Danish manufacturer Hummel.

And the latest update for fans planning to travel to Qatar in November and December to watch their team will cause more trouble: they will have to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test on arrival. This will be necessary even for those who are fully vaccinated, with every person aged six and above needing to provide a negative PCR test taken in the 48 hours before arriving in Doha; as an alternative, it is possible to show the result from a rapid test taken within 24 hours.

And there are even more hurdles for football fans: every person aged 18 or over will have to download the ‘Ehteraz’ app on their mobile phone which might not only be used to track the health status of the user, but also their movements.
