World Cup 2022 in Qatar: No Alcohol in the Stadiums

The organisers of the Qatar World Cup have a sober message for fans: No beer will be allowed in the stands.

The World Cup in Qatar, which will take place in November and December, already has a somewhat lacklustre reputation: The event is controversial and not only because of its unusual date in winter. The disregard for human rights and dubious procedures in the awarding of this World Cup have also attracted criticism. And now there is news from Qatar that is sure to irk fans: The stadiums in Qatar must remain absolutely alcohol-free. Fans will not be allowed to consume beer in the stadiums.

Sale of alcohol

The sale of alcohol is set to be permitted outside the stadiums, but beer cans and bottles must remain outside when entering. No beer or other alcoholic beverages will be available at the stalls inside either. This is according to several media outlets citing a Reuters report. Around 1.5 million fans from abroad – including football supporters from England, Germany and France – are expected to flock to Qatar.

World Cup has take a lot of flak

It is not yet clear whether the sale and consumption of beer and other alcoholic beverages will be permitted in the fan zones in Qatar. As things stand, this is only allowed at certain times. In recent weeks, the organizers of the World Cup have also taken a lot of flak for advising fans to do without banners in rainbow colours, for example. In addition, there are reports that hotels in Qatar are refusing entry to homosexual guests.
