WSET: Wine education booms globally

Global wine education provider the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) reports record number of countries where courses are taken.

WSET, the UK-based global educator who provides professional and internationally recognised wine and spirit qualifications, has reported that students from a record number of 75 countries enrolled in the past academic year.

Record numbers and languages

It is reported that “in total, 117,000 students took a WSET qualification in 2021-2022,” representing an 8% increase year-on-year. Candidates took exams in 15 languages and 11% of courses were taken digitally. The US and UK are the biggest markets for the education body with the US “remaining the largest market with over 23,000 candidates and showing 15% growth. With 36% growth and 20,000 candidates, the UK was the fastest growing and biggest market. “The Netherlands, Germany and Spain also showed significant growth, with the Netherlands making it into WSET’s top ten markets for the first time. In the APAC region, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan (China) and South Korea – all top 10 WSET markets – were the strongest performers,” the WSET said.

Professionals and wine lovers alike

While the WSET is the premier provider of professional wine qualification, its courses are open to non-professionals, too. WSET chief executive Michelle Brampton says: “I've seen WSET’s incredible potential and the way in which our qualifications empower students and change lives. Our task now is to strengthen the organisation’s foundations, so that we are in a strong position to give more students all over the world access to our learning experiences.”
