Auction house selling two 1966 magnums of Dom Pérignon

Vintage Champagne available at Dreweatts Fine and Rare Wines and Spirits sale.

While James Bond preferred a ’53 so long as it wasn’t “served above 38 degrees Fahrenheit” (Goldfinger), most of us wouldn’t turn our noses up at any bottle of Dom Pérignon, vintage or not. And if you’ve got around £700 going spare you may be able to get your hands on a ’66 vintage, with two magnums of that most luxurious of Champagnes up for auction later this month.

The lots from a private collection will go under the hammer at Dreweatts of Berkshire, sold separately according to the auction house “to give more than one person the opportunity to drink them”. Estimates value the magnums that have been stored in excellent cellar conditions at between £600-£800, plus fees.

With one of the most distinctive bottle-shapes and the drink only produced in the best years, all Dom Pérignons are rare, with only 45 vintages produced and brand owner, Moët & Chandon, keeping the number of bottles it produces secret.

The Fine and Rare Wine Sale on February 23 also includes a case of 1982 Chateau Gruaud Larose 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien (est. £3,200-£4,200), and six bottles of 2020 Domaine Francois Raveneau, Chablis Premier Cru, Butteaux (est. £3,200-£3,800).
