Tourism Ireland are keen to take full advantage of the success of The Banshees of Inisherin by marketing the film’s locations to visitors from the US and around the world – a budget in excess of €500,000 (approx. £440,000) set aside to promote Inis Mór and Achill Island.

With nine Oscar nominations, Ireland’s tourist bosses want to up the campaign ahead of the Hollywood ceremony on March 12, with a promotional video in association with Searchlight Pictures already created, using behind-the-scenes footage and shots of the film’s stunning locations.

With around a third of tourist trips to Ireland believed to be inspired by film and TV shows, Tourism Ireland has run previous campaigns based around Star Wars, Episodes VII and VIII filmed at areas including Portmagee, Game of Thrones and Derry Girls.

When The Banshees of Inisherin was first released, press trips and a publicity push saw coverage worth €2.2million in EAV (equivalent advertising value) achieved; the promotional video explained that the aim was “to highlight the stunning scenery of the west of Ireland and to remind cinemagoers overseas that The Banshees of Inisherin was shot on location here.”

At the recent BAFTAS, best supporting acting awards were picked up by Kerry Condon (Siobhán) and Barry Keoghan (Dominic), along with Martin McDonagh winning the original screenplay prize and the film handed the honour for outstanding British film.
