Domaines Loupier

Falstaff Online Österreich 2023

The story of Domaines Lupier could be titled wherever love falls. However, it is less about their love for each other and more about their love for a specific, original Spanish grape variety - Garnacha. The story of Domaines Lupier began in 2000 when the passionate oenologist Enrique Basarte and the economist Elisa Úcar met at Chivite, one of the leading producers in the Navarra region, where they developed the project to "save the Garnacha", as they both called it, because the true qualities of this grape variety were almost hidden among the many mass-produced wines made from this grape variety. With Domaines Lupier, the couple want to conjure these up again and prove that Garnacha can produce outstanding wines if it is handled correctly. To this end, they first looked for parcels of land with the oldest and oldest vines possible. They found what they were looking for in the north of the Navarra region, where they were able to acquire 27 parcels spread over 17 hectares. The vines are 75 years old, some even up to 100, but the yields are rather homeopathic at around 20 hectoliters per hectare. Nevertheless, the grapes are rigorously selected again during the harvest, which lasts for weeks. As a reduction to the essentials, in this case to the character of the Garnacha, often yielding more, only two wines are produced: "El Terroir" and "La Dama", both of which are of course 100% Garnacha. In the region's continental climate with cool Atlantic influences, the wines show a clear connection to the terroir as well as a fine, cool mineral vein, which gives the wines an unusual tension. In the few years since its foundation, there are already clear signs that we can expect a lot from Domaines Lupier in the future.
