Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

For 120 years, Silberberg has had its finger on the pulse, has been innovative and enthusiastically active for the next generation of Styrian winegrowers: this is what the Silberberg Viticulture Academy is known for. Here, training at the educational centre for fruit growing and viticulture is combined with solid craftsmanship at the associated provincial winery. Since 2014, Klaus Fischer, a young, dynamic and cosmopolitan young cellar master, has been responsible for the wines. The vineyard area, distributed over several locations in southern Styria, has been managed by master winemaker Gernot Lorenz since 2019. Together with the oenologist Reinhold Holler, they work on new innovations and try out creative ideas.

In the vineyards, herbicides have been abandoned, the Schlossberg/Leutschach site is entirely certified organic, and more than three quarters of the area is protected by hail nets. The wine cellar has been equipped with modern technology, and spontaneous fermentation is increasingly being used.

Even before the introduction of the Südsteiermark DAC quality seal, the Silberberg wines were clearly made to highlight their provenance. A perfect range of regional wines is complemented by local wines from Leutschach and Kitzeck. The wines from the Trebien, Steinbruch and Annaberg vineyards come from the slate soils of the Sausal. Their gem Riesling is lovingly cultivated in Kitzeck. In contrast to this are the wines from the opok soils in the municipality of Leutschach an der Weinstraße: all of the vineyards there are certified organic. In the cellar, these wines are deliberately fermented spontaneously and, if possible, aged in wooden barrels. This distinguishes these wines even more clearly from the Sausal wines.
