Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

Christina Netzl and her parents Franz and Christine Netzl are a well-coordinated team. Together they vinify wines that are full of character, finesse and, above all, depth from the family-run vineyards around Göttlesbrunn, in the heart of the Carnuntum wine-growing region.

The family winery was established around 1860 and developed from a mixed agricultural business. Constant striving for the highest quality in the vineyards, as well as in the cellar, has been the hallmark of the last few generations and allowed the winery to grow to its current 30 hectares of vineyards. The personal goal of the winegrowing family as a member of the "Österreichische Traditionsweingüter" (Austrian Traditional Wine Estates) is to bring out the uniqueness and typicity of the individual grape varieties with a focus on their provenance. Above all, the characteristics of the individual vineyards are increasingly coming to the fore. The basis for this is, of course, the vines and therefore the cultivation of the vineyards according to organic guidelines. Together they spend hours tinkering in the vineyard and cellar. While Franz contributes his experience, knowledge and tradition, Christina provides new ideas and innovations - in short, they complement each other perfectly, and it is precisely this combination that forms the unmistakable basis of Netzl wines.

Zweigelt is, and remains, the absolute king among the varieties, because it suits the climatic conditions of Carnuntum and its soils. As the basis of almost all wines, Zweigelt fascinates above all with its incredible versatility, because everything from classically fruity to a savoury, refined glass of wine can be made from this grape. For example, as a single-vineyard Zweigelt from the Ried Haidacker 1ÖTW and as the most important part of the top cuvée Anna-Christina from the Ried Bärnreiser 1ÖTW, it forms wines at the top of the range.

"This is exactly the direction we will continue to take, as the old Zweigelt vineyards produce the highest quality every year and thus great ageing potential for the future - indigenous, archetypal and simply ingenious!"
