Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

The Markowitsch winery has made the leap into the Austrian wine elite in a very short time. Only through uncompromising striving for quality was it possible to achieve this goal, which was crowned with the "Winemaker of the Year" award by Falstaff magazine in 1999.

Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir dominate the red wines, while Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc dominate the white wines. In order to meet the international demand for top wines, an additional 40 hectares of grapes from contract vintners are bought according to strictly controlled guidelines.

In order to meet the challenges of modern viticulture with their enormous know-how, the Markowitsch family built one of the most modern winery buildings in Austria in 2001. Gerhard Markowitsch's goal is to make the terroir of Carnuntum recognisable in his wines. For him, this means an increased use of indigenous grape varieties such as Zweigelt, but also the use of international varieties in order to develop a clear profile in the wide world of wine.

With the 2004 M1 vintage, Gerhard Markowitsch won the prestigious "Erste Bank Reserve Trophy" at the 2007 Falstaff Red Wine Awards, and in 2012, he came second overall with the 2010 Rosenberg. In autumn 2015, Gerhard Markowitsch again won the "Erste Bank Reserve Trophy" with the M1 of the 2012 vintage, and in November 2017, he became the second Falstaff winner with the Cuvée Rosenberg. Finally, in 2019, he brought the coveted Falstaff Red Wine Award victory to Niederösterreich with the 2017 Cuvée Ried Rosenberg, and again came in 2nd place the previous year. A consistency that is unparalleled!
