Falstaff Wineguide Austria 2022/23

"Focus!" is the motto followed by Martina and Johannes Gross - primarily on really good wines in the entry-level segment as well as on Rieden wines that are allowed to linger in their cellar for a long time. Their South Styrian regional wines, such as Sauvignon Blanc or Gelber Muskateller, owe that certain something to the care they take with their own hands. Thus, all wines of the house are from family-owned vineyards that enjoy devoted cultivation.

The Welschriesling from Weingut Gross presents itself in a completely new, progressive style. The winemaking couple calls it "Welschriesling Pro." and demonstrates what the variety is capable of achieving. The reduced grape yield and the longer ageing make it a terrific food wine. In the area of Rieden wines, Weingut Gross was the first white wine estate in Austria to take a bold step: All Rieden wines are allowed to "mature" at their own pace. They are allowed at least four years for ageing and maturation before they are presented in the first phase of their drinking maturity. These wines are marketed under the abbreviation 'FR' for barrel reserve. You can taste how well the wines have benefitted from the unforced development and ageing under the best conditions.
