Falstaff Wineguide Austria 2022/23

"Klein makes wine" - with heart and passion. This slogan of the winery describes in three words what Jacqueline Klein loves doing most: wine. In Andau in sunny northern Burgenland, she founded her own winery in 2010 and has developed it into one of Austria's leading red wine addresses, with skill and hard work.

Zweigelt is her great passion. Around 80 percent of the vineyard area is devoted to the red wine varieties Zweigelt, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. "The Zweigelt is the leading variety of our winery", Jacqueline Klein says, "and is offered both as a single varietal as well as an exciting partner in a cuvee. The variety of nuances in its taste while simultaneously displaying clear characteristics always inspires me anew." Since March 2012, the land in the eastern Seewinkel has been considered the Neusiedlersee DAC region, which is known far beyond the borders of Austria for its elegant Zweigelt wines. However, it does not remain exclusively for exciting red wines - the vintner's white wine range is also impressive.

Ideal climatic conditions prevail at Lake Neusiedl. The area around the largest steppe lake in Central Europe was used for wine growing as early as the time of the Romans. The unique microclimate with its hot, dry summer days, cool nights and relatively mild winters, combined with the mineral-warm red gravel and brown earth soils, offers ideal conditions for viticulture. "The soil conditions of our vineyards located around Andau are very diverse. During cultivation, I have precisely coordinated which variety suits which of our vineyards," Jacqueline Klein gives insight into her working methods. "My goal is to get the power of the grape into the bottle. That's what I work for every day with my team."
