Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

The wines of the brothers Karl and Gustav Strauss from Gamlitz impressively reflect Southern Styria: on the one hand, elegant and harmonious, on the other, a bit wild, intense and full of contrasts. All of the growths have one thing in common: they combine power with fruit, freshness with a lot of elegance and they are all very drinkable.

Every wine-growing region in the world has its own charm - Southern Styria has a very special one. Here the brothers press a wide range of quality wines: From the fruity-fresh regional wines Südsteiermark DAC (Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, Morillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller) to the fruity-full local wines "Gamlitz" (mainly from the varieties Sauvignon Blanc and Muskateller) to the Riedenweine of the sites Gamlitzberg and Hundsberg, which are aged in large neutral oak barrels and in the "Betonei" (concrete egg). In particularly good years, the "Strauss Reserve Line" from the Gamlitzberg vineyard is pressed; these grapes ripen for up to 24 months in barrique barrels towards perfection. Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are bottled with a great ageing potential.

The winery has been family-owned since 1810 and offers visitors cellar tours and tastings with a great view of the Gamlitzberg. In addition to the main house, a second building was also opened in 2019: "sleep | eat | drink" in the "Genuss Schmiede" Tscherne-Strauss in the style of a boutique hotel with breathtaking views over the vineyards.
