Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

The Leth family winery in Fels is located directly on the loess terraces of the Wagram. The loess significantly shapes the character of the wines and gives the Grüner Veltliner a great spiciness, density and harmony. It is therefore no coincidence that more than half of the 52 hectares of vineyards are dedicated to this variety. Five different Grüner Veltliners are pressed from the south-facing terraced vineyards. Outstanding are the two site wines of Brunnthal and Scheiben, which are classified as first sites of the "Traditionsweingüter Österreich". It is not a striking primary fruit that is in the foreground of these wines, but the complexity of the aromatics, fine minerality and an excellent certain ageing potential for long bottle ageing. The fact that the Veltliners from the Leth Winery are among the best in the country is impressively proven by first places in the "Falstaff Grüner Veltliner Grand Prix" as well as in the "SALON Österreich Wein". In addition to Grüner Veltliner, another focus of the winery is on the traditional Wagram variety Roter Veltliner. With an extremely successful combination of fruit texture and juiciness, it demonstrates the quality and certain ageing potential of this increasingly popular speciality, which is vinified in three ways.

The Wagram can certainly be described as a white wine region, but at Weingut Leth one also encounters a concentrated red wine competence. Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and St. Laurent show how well these varieties thrive in a cooler climate zone. With the "Gigama", an exceptional Zweigelt, he proves how excellently cellar master Franz Leth junior can handle it, which already brought him the variety victory at the Falstaff Red Wine Awards.

With 2019, a lot has changed at the winery: Extensive investments in a new press house, in a new wooden barrel cellar as well as in the entire business infrastructure now offer optimal conditions to further hone the individual character of the wines. The conversion to organic viticulture, which is almost completed and will yield the first organically certified vintage with the 2021 harvest, should also contribute to this.
