Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

In just a few years, Markus Huber has managed to establish himself as the leading winery of the Traisental with his wines. The aim of this winemaker and chairman of the Traisental vintners is to produce individualistic wines full of character on the one hand and to contribute to making the Traisental, with its unique lime-rich conglomerate soils, better known on the other. Markus Huber vinifies wines with a focussed style, showing minerality and typicity of the terroir.

The main variety is clearly Grüner Veltliner. This is produced in four different styles. Depending on the type of soil and the grapes' ageing potential, it is either vinified in steel tanks or in large wooden barrels. The second most important variety is Riesling, followed by Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains).

"Salon"-selected 2003, state winner, four times "Falstaff Grüner Veltliner Grand Prix"-winner, gold medal at the "London International Wine and Spirit Competition" and awarded as "Best White Wine Producer", outstanding reviews in Austrian trade media, a nomination for the award "Newcomer of the Year" in Falstaff magazine and finally the designation "Wunderkind" in the English "Decanter": Markus Huber already seems to be on the right track.

Markus Huber is also following a straight path when it comes to quality assurance of the product: Since 2007, the winery has been IFS and BRC certified. Uncompromising work in favour of the highest quality is Markus Huber's top priority. "To turn the quality screw a little bit more every year, that is my incentive", says the winemaker. Since 2020, all vineyards have been certified organic. The winery is a member of the "Traditionsweingüter Österreich" association. In 2015, Markus Huber was awarded "Wine-maker of the Year" by Falstaff magazine.
