Markus Pongratz has been impressing wine connoisseurs and critics at home and abroad with his consistent fruity wine range for several years now. The success of his wines is no coincidence but is due to the good combination of many factors: One factor is that the top sites on the Kranachberg and Hochberg with their sandy soils provide the foundation for good quality of the Pongratz wines. Another important factor is the full phenolic ripeness potential of the grapes, which are pre-selected by repeated manual harvesting. And last but not least for producing such excellent wines every year is the latest cellar technology, combined with the know-how of cellar master Markus Pongratz.
In 2008 Markus and Sabine Pongratz took over the winery from their parents. Apart from running the winery they also accommodate events and weddings in the most elegantly understated venue with delightful views over the vineyards. A barn swallow is also very symbolic for the Pongratz family. Every year, when the swallows return after winter, there is a traditional swallow festival with vintage tasting at the winery. A very renowned painter of Southern Styria, namely Gerald Brettschuh, has designed some swallow motifs for the winery, which are depicted on some of their wine labels. Unsurprisingly, the best from Pongratz is called "Schwalbenhimmel" (Swallow heaven).
