Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

When Roman Pfaffl was awarded the title "Falstaff Winemaker of the Year" in 1996, a dream he had not dared to dream came true. In just under 20 years, he had, with the help of his wife Adelheid, created a 20 hectare wine estate of great ambition from an agricultural business with just 0.75 hectares of vineyards. Another 20 years followed, during which the next generation was strongly involved. This interaction obviously worked, the American magazine "Wine Enthusiast" elected the winery as "European Winery of the Year" in 2016, the first time this coveted title went to an Austrian producer.

So, for about 40 years, the Pfaffls have been a benchmark for high-quality Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Zweigelt, and St. Laurent. The estate's vineyards, which now cover 110 hectares, are scattered across ten different municipalities in the southern Weinviertel region and reach as far as Vienna. This distribution brings with it a diversity of soils and microclimates, which Roman Josef Pfaffl skilfully exploits. He knows how to bring out the characteristics of the individual sites and create wines in a wide variety of styles, from light and playful to dense and powerful. Of course, this is especially true for Grüner Veltliner, which is vinified in as many as six variations. But the winery is also very strong in red wines. "Some of our vineyards benefit from the mild Pannonian climate, which comes to us via the Marchfeld", Roman Josef Pfaffl says, not without ambition, because he is particularly fond of reds.
