Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2020

After Birgit and Helmuth Renner had taken over the family business in 1988, they slowly and patiently began to improve and up-date operations to create a modern estate, which today can certainly hold its own in international competition. They now own 14 hectares of vineyards and it is Helmuth Renner’s singular aim to express the character of the region in his wines. Complexity, suppleness and unique expression of place are the fundamental values of his philosophy. Helmuth Renner has proved over the past few years that he has perfected a style of his very own. Among white varieties, Chardonnay and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) are two of his favourites, but red wines are his true passion. From the vintage 2000 onwards he has been producing a St. Laurent under the name of Alter Weingarten. In the year 2000, he produced his first single-vineyard Zweigelt with fruit from the Golser Altenberg, but it was another seven years before he produced a follow-up, only to win first prize in the premium category at the Falstaff Red Wine Premier. From 2011 onwards, there will once again be a premium blend from Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. After St. Laurent, the second international variety at the estate is Merlot, which was first planted in 2000. Most of it is used in a typical regional blend with Zweigelt called "Heideboden". The red and white "Pannobile" wines are the most well-known in the assortment. The red "Pannobile" is produced from Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, while the white version is made of 100% Pinot Blanc.
