Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

The Salzl - Seewinkelhof winery in Illmitz is located near Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See) and the Seewinkel National Park. The history of the family business dates back to 1840. With Heribert, Josef and Christoph Salzl, three generations are currently working hand in hand to produce authentic wines with passion and care under the motto "enjoyment and joie de vivre". Since 2009, the wines have been vinified in the new winery in the middle of the Illmitz vineyards. Not only architecturally, but also technically, the winery is one of Austria's showcase wineries.

The focus of the total production with 70 percent is on red wine. Over the years, Zweigelt, which is typical for the region, has emerged as the most important grape variety. In addition to the second local grape variety, Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah provide an international style. Chardonnay sets the tone for white wine. Sweet wine is also a must at an Illmitz winery.

The influence of the Pannonian Plain and Lake Neusiedl, create a very special terroir, giving the wines elegance, freshness and a salty minerality. Added to this is the optimal soil composition, which ranges from fine sand to light gravel to dark black earth soils.

Salzl wines enjoy a high reputation worldwide and are known for their softness and warmth - typical characteristics of the Seewinkel region. If you want to taste these delightful wines, you should book a tasting. If you want to 'taste' a little more extensively, a stay in the attached four-star guesthouse is recommended.
