Falstaff Wineguide Austria 2022/23

No matter where you look: Everywhere are picturesque vineyards that nestle together for miles - that is the Weinviertel. In the middle of this idyll and not far from the Czech border lies Schrattenthal, Austria's smallest wine town. And there you will find the Zull winery, which, with 19 hectares of vineyards, is not really big, but produces great wines. Everything about this winery is family. At the beginning of the 1980s, Werner Zull was just about to start his studies, when his brother had a fatal accident. The family stuck together during this difficult time, and Werner Zull exchanged his studies for working in the vineyard. Since then, quality wine has been produced on the Zull wine estate and - this was new - bottled.

Meanwhile, the small winery has long been known and famous for its wines. On the one hand, this is due to the special microclimate of the area: heat and sun help the grapes to ripen optimally, the nearby Manhartsberg keeps cold winds from the neighboring Waldviertel away. On the other hand, the deeply rooted roots vines get the best out of the soil. And last but not least, the Zulls' natural way of working contributes to the unmistakably elegant and at the same time multi-layered wines. Instead of grand gestures and exaggerated use of technology, the Zulls focus on intuition, perseverance and a lot of patience with the courage to experiment. Son Phillip continues what father Werner has always pursued as a vision: to produce wines full of character with brilliance and great ageing potential - such as the Grüner Veltliner "Äußere Bergen", the Riesling "Innere Bergen" or the sought-after Pinot Noir.
