A celebration of filmmaking

Film buffs can rejoice...a new museum devoted to the moviemaking, spearheaded by the organisation responsible for the Oscars, will open next week in Los Angeles. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the largest institution of its kind in the US. "We need to celebrate everything this town and the art form has brought to the world, Variety magazine quoted two-time Academy Award winner and trustee Tom Hanks as saying at a media preview. "The end result exceeds our dreams by about tenfold.”

Located on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, the 300,000-square-foot complex includes a giant glass dome designed by architect Renzo Piano. Bill Kramer, the museum's president and director, told CBS News that the organisation has 13 million items in its collection and also has others on loan. They include Dorothy's ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz , an extraterrestrial headpiece worn in Alien and a fullscale model shark from Jaws. There are also two theatres on site. The museum had been scheduled to open in the spring but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Good to Know: The Academy Museum opens on September 30, 2021. Details can be found on its website.
