Sushi Masaki Saito was the only restaurant in the city to receive two stars, while 12 restaurants were awarded one star. No restaurants were awarded three stars, the highest accolade from the venerable French guide.

"Even if you lived next door, omakase with chef Masaki Saito would still feel like a faraway adventure," Michelin Guide said of the two-star Japanese restaurant. "The foyer's marble staircase, a 200-year-old hinoki counter, and traditional Japanese paneling and woodwork set the stage as he slices, scores and sauces the greatest treasures of the sea."

Japanese cuisine was well represented in the Toronto guide, with one star each awarded to sushi/Kaiseki restaurants Aburi Hana, Kaiseki Yu-zen Hashimoto, Shoushin and Yukashi.

Other restaurants to be crowned with one-star were Alo, Alobar Yorkville, Don Alfonso 1890, Enigma Yorkville, Edulis, Frilu, Osteria Giulia and Quetzal.
