Lenz Moser is a scion of the Austrian Lenz Moser wine dynasty. He cut his teeth in the family wine business and later became the European representative of Robert Mondavi Winery, California. In 2005, he founded Laurenz V in order to promote Austria’s flagship variety, Grüner Veltliner. In 2015, he decided on a joint venture with Château Changyu Moser XV in Ningxia with the aim of producing China’s best wines. He has recently founded New Chapter in partnership with Austrian winemaker Markus Huber.
The best advice I ever got
My grandmother once said: “Stay as you are – don’t try to be someone else – Lenz stays Lenz” the older I get the more wisdom I see in my grandma’s advice – I love being me with all my positives and negatives, yet trying to improve all the time.
My life motto
“To love to serve and to try again” – I read Steven R. Covey 20 years ago and he mentioned this in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It encompasses everything I have always believed in, and how I was educated by my grandparents, parents, mentors .
I am currently reading
Two books: The Future is Asian by Parag Khanna – wow what an eye opener, even after 20 years of travelling to Asia - there is so much still to learn.
Weinbau Einmal Anders by my grandfather Prof. Dr. Lenz Moser III – re-reading as I want to learn again his basic ideas about viticulture – how modern he was when writing this book 55 years ago.
My most played music track
I love Chopin, but don’t pin me down to one piece please.
If I didn’t do my current job I would be
Retired – I love what I do and I will never retire – my father turned 91 last year and only this year he is thinking of slowing down – omg!
Skill I don’t currently possess one but would like to have
I would love to be able to play the piano – I was forced to learn to play when I was 10 years old, then too stupid to see the value of playing an instrument- grrrhhh! Never too late though.
My favourite kind of exercise
Is getting up at 6am in the morning, which I do every day, and do my morning routine – simple push-ups and a little yoga, making breakfast thereafter, enjoying every bite of something healthy, porridge with fruits, no tea, no coffee, juice instead and lots of water.
I relax while
I read, walk in nature, living 50 meters away from Lake Neusiedlersee National Park.
My essential newspaper/magazine
All possible wine publications and the Weekend FT and German quality dailies such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Die Welt and Spiegel.de.
My desert-island wine
Maybe a Grüner and definitely Opus One and our new family Blanc de Noir by Chateau Changyu Moser XV.
I have learnt a lot from
Bob Mondavi and my grandfather (Lenz III) about basic things in life and marketing such as: make a better wine year after year for loyal customers and respect mother nature.
My last meal and sip will be
Don’t know, don’t want to know.
